We don’t know each other yet, so let us introduce ourselves. We are students at a secondary school specializing in aeronautics and ICT and we are writing from Italy. Our school lies in the north of the country and it’s called Fauser. It is a very big technical school, with about 1,000 students aged between 14 and 19 years old.
In October some of our teachers introduced us to the “Recycle Your Smartphone” project and we were very happy to do our part in it.
So, six ninth-grade classes joined the project and started creating table games, posters and a box with the aim of collecting smartphones and tablet computers and sending them to recycling associations. But before that we took the devices, opened them and weighed their hardware components. We came to collect about 3 kg worth of useful and reusable material. Through the posters that we hung along the school corridors we also spread awareness about the consequence of not recycling properly. It is not that we don’t care about recycling, in fact it’s quite the opposite.
In Italy, every household carries out separate collections and sorts the garbage into paper, plastic, glass, aluminum and leftovers.
We also collect batteries, used vegetable oil, medicines, paint, appliances and many other things. We take them all to a special site where waste is collected and either recycled or taken to a landfill.
All of this because most of us in Europe care about our planet. However, almost none of us knew about the problems generated by the production of electronic devices or was aware of how important the recycling of rare metals inside them is. So now we have a collecting center in our school and we are very proud to be able to do so. It is also very important to us that you too can get some help through this project.
Wishing you all the best,
Classe 1A – ITT Fauser – Novara (ITALY)
